3 miles per hour (or 5 kilometres, if you prefer) is the speed at which most of us walk.

It’s probably the best pace for our thoughts, too.

Modern life moves fast - often much faster than we can truly keep up with. 3 mph is a new initiative to help us slow down, and to leverage the power of walking to align body, mind and the world around us. Read more here about the walks that we facilitate to support peace actors, writers and leaders.

About 3mph

Walking is proven to catalyze creativity and dramatically improve focus and memory. 3mph uses walking as a way to bring mind and body into alignment, and to stimulate new thought and conversation. A discussion over the course of a journey will have a dynamism and direction that is hard to achieve in a static environment. Walking benefits group cohesion, because it is inherently non-confrontational.

There is a connection between slowness and remembering, just as there is one between speeding up and forgetting. Walking is one of the best ways to help us match our pace of thought, and contemplate the bigger questions we face with clarity.

3mph offers Writing Walks - a pilgrimage for writers carried out at the speed of walking along the Camino de Santiago, and Peace Walks - a walking residency designed to create and strengthen connections between peace actors. In due course we will also add Leadership Walks, for those who want to reflect on and enhance their creativity, strategic thinking and impact in their leadership roles.

3mph is not intended as an athletic endeavour. The act of walking is used as a way to facilitate our shared goals. The walks are led and facilitated by specialists in these fields, bringing decades of experience to the program.
