About 3mph

3 mph takes its name comes from the idea that we think best at the speed of walking. As writer (and walker) Rebecca Solnit puts it, “I suspect that the mind, like the feet, works at about three miles an hour. If this is so, then modern life is moving faster than the speed of thought, or thoughtfulness.” Diogenes made it even simpler - Solvitur Ambulando - whatever it is, “it is solved by walking.”

3mph uses the power of walking in different ways. There is a twice-yearly writing workshop on foot, which takes place in the spring in Northern Ireland, and in the fall on the Camino de Santiago, between Portugal and Spain. Over the  course of a week, writers working through their own projects  have sessions on finding a voice, structure, research, editing, and advice on getting published. They walk, talk, think and write at 3mph (or, if you prefer, 5kmph.)

The companion program is Peace Walks - a week-long walking residency in Northern Ireland, designed to create and strengthen connections between peace actors. Participants on a Peace Walk will spend time walking together each day, combined with facilitated discussions and unstructured reflection and contemplation time. There will be interaction, planned and organic, with the story of Northern Ireland and its own pathway through conflict and peace.

In due course we will also begin offering Leadership Walks.
